Abstract:
Data management is rarely anyone’s favorite task. In research projects, it is often considered an additional burden and something that competes with “actual” research. Yet it can make collaboration much easier, increase the visibility of scientific output and support knowledge transfer. In the DAM mission “Protection and Sustainable Use of Marine Areas” (sustainMare), which investigates ecological, economic, and social impacts in the German North and Baltic Sea, data management aims to do exactly that by supporting collaboration and accessibility throughout the project runtime. Beyond standard research data management practices, the focus lies on interim data storage solutions for secure data sharing among mission partners and on web-based GIS viewers implemented on the Marine Data Portal that make selected data products visible and usable to a broad audience.
