Abstract:
Data assimilation is the methodology to combine models, for example of the atmosphere or ocean, with observational data taking into account their respective uncertainties. Data assimilation allows the models to learn from the observational data by e.g. improving the model state or model process parameters. This workshop will introduce the basic concepts of data assimilation and selected methods for high-dimensional models. The focus will be on ensemble-based data assimilation in which an ensemble of model state realizations is used to dynamically estimate the best model state and its uncertainty. Next to lectures, hands-on tutorials will be an important part of the workshop. In these, the participants will learn how data assimilation can be applied and will examine how data assimilation works in idealized cases.
