Abstract:

The Quaternary climate history of Patagonia is closely tied to the paleoceanography of the Southeast Pacific. Key players in this coupled system are the Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS), the Antarctic Circumpolar Current/Cape Horn Current system and the associated Southern Westerly Winds, which deliver exceptionally high precipitation to the southern Andes. Fragmentary terrestrial records from the eastern flank of the Andes point to highly variable PIS dynamics. In contrast, marine sediments from the SE Pacific continental slope and from the overdeepened, Pacific-facing fjords provide quasi-continuous archives of land-ocean interaction across multiple timescales, which will be the main focus of of the presentation.
