Abstract:

During the MSM142 expedition aboard the German research vessel Maria S. Merian (March–May 2026), an international team led by GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel investigated the role of currents, eddies, and fronts in transporting heat, freshwater, and nutrients in the subpolar North Atlantic. The cruise combined studies of the spring phytoplankton bloom in the Labrador Sea with long-term observations of large-scale circulation, while placing particular emphasis on the influence of small-scale ocean features such as fronts, filaments, and eddies on physical and biogeochemical processes. This presentation provides an overview of the expedition and highlights first im-pressions as well as preliminary results from the biogeochemical investigations.
