DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Zengchao Xu (FB2-BI)\n\nAbstract:\nMarine plankton s
ize spectra are increasingly used to characterize energy transfer and to e
stimate carbon export in the ocean. However\, the mechanistic pathways lin
king plankton size structure to carbon export across different oceanic reg
imes remain poorly constrained. Here\, we combine field observations from
the western Pacific Ocean\, including phytoplankton pigment\, zooplankton
communities\, and particle imagery\, to investigate how the coupled size s
tructures of phytoplankton and zooplankton regulate the pathways\, magnitu
de\, and efficiency of particulate organic carbon export. To place these r
egional findings in a broader context\, we further integrate a global data
set of zooplankton images derived from scanner and Underwater vision profi
le systems spanning 1996 to 2022. This allows us to examine\, at the globa
l scale\, how variations in plankton size structure are linked to carbon e
xport across contrasting productivity regimes. Our results provide new ins
ights into size-based controls on the biological carbon pump and highlight
the importance of trophic structure in modulating carbon export efficienc
 y.\nMeeting link:https://geomar.webex.com/geomar/j.php?MTID=mf6b13ee3c306a
