 ncompass a number of different compounds that can be used to trace ventila
 tion and transport time-scales in the interior ocean. Observations of tran
 sient tracers is an Essential Ocean Variable (EOV) in the context of the G
 lobal Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and is a level 1 variable in the globa
 l repeat hydrography program (GO-SHIP). The reason is information about ve
 ntilation\, and increasingly the temporal variability and trends in ventil
 ation and transport\, is important to understand the ocean\, and how it ch
 anges.This short presentation I will present the physical/chemical basics 
 of transient tracers\, and showcase two studies showing variability in ven
