Abstract
Transient tracers encompass a number of different compounds that can be used to trace ventilation and transport time-scales in the interior ocean. Observations of transient tracers is an Essential Ocean Variable (EOV) in the context of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and is a level 1 variable in the global repeat hydrography program (GO-SHIP). The reason is information about ventilation, and increasingly the temporal variability and trends in ventilation and transport, is important to understand the ocean, and how it changes.
This short presentation I will present the physical/chemical basics of transient tracers, and showcase two studies showing variability in ventilation.
